Chow Chin Chuan - Bicycle Man

Artist Chow Chin Chuan Born 1961 - has skillfully transferred to canvas poignant scenes from yesteryears. The paintings almost always star the humble bicycle, a vital transportation during earlier days. Among the working class and the poor, it was also one of the few valuable possessions they owned. In his brilliantly precise way, Chow expressly shows how the bicycle is indispensable namely to the diligent, elderly shopkeeper who uses it to deliver sundry goods from a box trapped to the carrying rack. He has also chosen to compose it against such evocative scenes as a traditional barber trimming the hair of his customer in a back lane of the sinewy, hardworking hands of a man crouching in an old shirt and pants. Drawn with such clarity and accuracy, the nostalgic sights of bygone days seem to come alive in Chow’s paintings.

Words from Artist :

Ajis Mohammad

Ajis Mohammad

Zainurin Mohamad known more as Ajis to his art circle friends was born on May 24 1964 at Kajang, Selangor.

His early exposure towards art starts at Jalan Melayu in Kuala Lumpur in 1986.Being turned down to study arts at UiTM, provokes and challenge him to be more determined to become a successful artist.

Ajis travel all around the country drawing portraits for his petty living ; forcing him even to spend his night at the roadside.

Ajis the diver loves the underwater world and Ajis the painter loves to share its beauty on canvas. His first dive at Tenggol Island off Trengganu leaves a lasting impact in Ajis future works. He awed at its beauty and were amazed at its serene and calm atmosphere. His ability in depicting the beauty is an art by itself. Ajis is a realist in the true sense.

He use to lament; "divers do not paint and painters do not dive" and this spark his interest in pursuing his underwater odyssey. "The beauty of our marine life is our heritage, it is our responsibility to highlight the awareness and preservation because it have the value that signifies our appreciation towards nature".

Ahmad Zakii Anwar

AHMAD ZAKII ANWAR

Ahmad Zakii Anwar (b. 1955, Malaysia) - better known as Zakii - has emerged as one of the most exciting, engaging and eloquent 'urban realist' artists in the region.

A graduate of the School of Art and Design, MARA Institute of Technology Malaysia, the artist began his career as a graphic artist, producing some of the leading advertising graphics of his time before turning to fine art practice.
Zakii came to attention for his virtuosity and command of a spectrum of media from charcoals to oils, building a reputation for stunning photo-realist still-life paintings and expressive portraits. Later, a more contemporary edge surfaced in his works as Zakii introduced urban subjects and settings into his canvases. He is lauded for capturing not just city motifs and urban features but also a distinctive psychological dimension and cinematic quality in these scenarios. Zakii's preoccupation with the spiritual or metaphysical aspects of urban life, as seen through his use of icons, symbols and allegories (including metaphors of theatre, performance and masks) have also marked his practice.
The artist's studio and viewing gallery is in Johor Bahru, Malaysia where he resides with his wife and children.

Rapheal Scott Ahbeng ( RSA )

Ahbeng is a painter, cartoonist, and former broadcaster and teacher.

“Painting is a way of expressing my feelings. I like to paint good things that give viewers a good feeling, and make them think and feel rejuvenated.
“I paint subjects that are close to my heart — nature and landscapes. Unlike people, they’re silent and don’t criticise,” Ahbeng said with a laugh.

LOOK carefully at Raphael Scott Ahbeng’s paintings and one notices that red is used in all of them — whether all over or just a dash.

“I like red. It gives a lot of warmth and is easy to make friends with other colours,” said the 70-year-old.

“I also do ceramic works and photography. All these keep me occupied and it’s great fun doing them every day.”

A few of his artworks have been successfully auctioned overseas, an achievement he is proud of and spurs him to continue painting while making new discoveries.

What Expert Say about Art Investment

ART When it comes to investment in collectibles such as art, which include paintings, sculptures and handicrafts, luck and timing are the main determinants of the rate of return. There's no fixed rate of return, as it is a subjective matter, depending on how much the buyer is willing to pay for that particular piece of creativity.

While still at an infancy stage, art investment in Malaysia has been gaining popularity over the last 20 years. One has to note, though, that most art collectors here are in not purely for monetary gains.

But as RogueArt Sdn Bhd director Beverly Yong puts it, the “returns” on art investment are often intangible. One being the gain of aesthetic and emotional satisfaction, while knowing that one is also contributing to creativity and the cultural heritage of the country.

“If one is knowledgeable and has good access to the works of major or emerging artists, one could build a collection, which would probably increase in value over the long term.

“Buying and selling art regularly for profit certainly requires one to have knowledge, a strong network and real engagement with the scene,” Yong emphasises. By CECILIA KOK
