Voon Kim Cheong

Born in 1968, in Kuala Lumpur, Voon Kim Cheong graduated from Saito Academy of Graphic Design in 1992. he sought further training as a fine art artist and made a living in illustration, design and painting. Voon had been working intensely on still-life and scenery sketching, using pencil and oil painting techniques from year 1993 through 2001, experimenting with different approaches to his work. This experimentation instigated his first series – the ‘Performer Series’, and has eventually led to the ‘Drum and Drummer Series’ also including the ‘Wau Series’ and ‘Gasing Series’ from year since 2002.
Voon is very fascinated by the sight and sound of our Malaysian cultural dances, particularly drums and the drummers. He look at a round-shaped drums as the amalgamation of the sun and moon. They have active and passive characteristics, but rely on the drummers to bring out the best vital – bring the strength and vibrancy to the team!
There is a tremendous energy and movement which emanates from the works of Voon Kim Cheong – a resonance and a vibrancy which almost catches the casual viewer off-guard with stunningly beautiful paintings.
In Voon’s vivacious oil canvases, reminiscent of Italian Futurism, curved kites dart and sway in the wind – tossing and turning amidst turbulent thermals. Gyroscopically spinning tops whirl and jostle while lively multi-racial drummers pound out the country’s life beat, reverberating and resonating with a dynamic passion displayed in a sultry equatorial Malaysia.
