Yeong Seak Ling: A Malaysian Master of Watercolor
Born in Perak in 1948, Yeong Seak Ling is a highly regarded artist in the Malaysian art scene, celebrated for his mastery of the watercolor technique. Despite being a self-taught artist, Yeong has left an indelible mark through his artistic prowess and his efforts in fostering artistic communities.
Yeong's influence extends through various art associations that he established over the years. In 1977, he founded the Utara Art Group, a platform that showcased his commitment to creating a supportive network for artists. In 2003, he further expanded his reach with the establishment of The Art Group Penang, demonstrating his dedication to the growth of the local art scene. In 2008, he founded Art Group International, connecting artists on an international scale and promoting cultural exchange.
As a testament to his dedication to watercolor art, Yeong Seak Ling played a pivotal role as a founding member of the Penang Water Colour Society in 1982. This society has been instrumental in the promotion and development of watercolor as a respected art form in Malaysia.
In 1996, Yeong took another significant step by founding Art Point Gallery in Penang. This gallery serves as a platform for artists to exhibit their works, contributing to the vibrant artistic culture of the region.
Yeong Seak Ling's artistic journey gained early recognition when he clinched the third prize in the Salon Malaysia 1966 competition. His prowess in watercolor was further acknowledged with victories in the Malaysian Landscape Water Colour Exhibition in 1982 and 1983, solidifying his status as a master of the medium.
Beyond his individual artistic achievements, Yeong Seak Ling's legacy is marked by his commitment to building artistic communities and providing platforms for fellow artists. His contributions have not only elevated his own standing but have also enriched the broader Malaysian art scene, leaving an enduring impact on generations to come.
~Tew Nai Tong~She Like Flowers 1999~Oil on Canvas~70x70 cm~( This painting is now available in our shop anyone interested pls call or whatsapp Lanie 014 2427760)
Tew Nai Tong, born in 1936 in Klang, Malaysia, left an indelible mark on the Malaysian art scene, earning recognition as "perhaps the last matinee idol of the old Nanyang style," according to esteemed art critic Ooi Kok Chuen. His artistic journey, spanning from his formative years to his later contributions, showcases a unique blend of influences and a commitment to artistic evolution.
Nai Tong embarked on his artistic education at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), graduating in 1958. Following the tradition of many NAFA graduates, he sought further inspiration and honed his skills at the École des Beaux-Arts in France. This experience marked a pivotal shift in his focus—from creating sketches and watercolor paintings of landscapes at NAFA to exploring the realm of figurative oil paintings in France.
Returning to Malaysia in 1969, Tew Nai Tong joined the Malaysian Institute of Art as a lecturer, bringing his enriched artistic perspective to the local art community. His tenure at the institute not only contributed to the education of aspiring artists but also allowed him to further develop his own artistic voice.
Nai Tong's body of work is a testament to the fusion of Nanyang and European influences. His earlier emphasis on landscapes transformed into a dedication to figurative oil paintings, reflecting the evolution of his artistic expression. The synthesis of these diverse influences contributed to the richness and depth of his portfolio.
The legacy of Tew Nai Tong endures through the recognition of his art in prestigious collections. His paintings can be found in the National Art Gallery of Malaysia, the Sarawak State Museum, and the Singapore Art Museum, underscoring the widespread impact of his contributions to the cultural heritage of the region.
In commemorating Tew Nai Tong, we celebrate not only an artist but a bridge between artistic traditions. His ability to seamlessly integrate Nanyang and European styles serves as an inspiration for future generations, emphasizing the importance of embracing diverse influences in the pursuit of artistic excellence.
