Yap Chin Hoe is a Malaysian artist who has been dedicated to his craft since his graduation from the Malaysian Institute of Arts in 1991. He pursued a Double Major in Oil Painting & Print Making during his academic journey.

Throughout his career, Yap Chin Hoe has developed a unique and distinctive artistic style. His work focuses on a series centered around antique Chinese porcelain as the primary subject matter. However, he adds a modern twist to these traditional objects, infusing them with contemporary elements to evoke a sense of nostalgia.

Yap Chin Hoe's artistic technique is characterized by intricate brushwork, which he uses to capture the ethereal essence of antique porcelain. He juxtaposes these delicate and often monochromatic porcelain pieces with vividly colored Nyonya tapestries. This combination serves to contrast the austerity of the classic blue and white Chinese porcelain with the vibrant and flamboyant Nyonya tapestry.

The result of Yap Chin Hoe's artistic approach is a fusion of past and present, tradition and modernity. His work conjures images of lively Peranakan celebrations where these flamboyant tapestries are paired with equally striking and historically rich Chinese wares. By combining these elements, he not only showcases the beauty of these two different cultural and artistic traditions but also brings out the dynamic and harmonious coexistence of contrasting elements in his art.

His journey as an artist began during his childhood when he discovered his passion for art. His parents encouraged his creativity by allowing him to experiment with mah-jong paper and calligraphy brushes.

During his artistic journey, Lim Ah Cheng had the opportunity to refine his skills under the guidance of Chong Chen Chuan, an established Malaysian artist who also served as the Chairman of the Calligraphy Society of Malaysia at the time.
Lim Ah Cheng's primary source of inspiration for the past 17 years has been the horse, a subject with a longstanding tradition in Chinese painting. He is captivated by the beauty, speed, and movement of horses. To express his artistic vision, he combines traditional Chinese painting techniques with elements of western abstract expressionism, striking a balance between the traditional and the contemporary.
In his artistic process, Lim Ah Cheng employs acrylic medium and Chinese brushstrokes to create his horse-themed artworks. This combination allows him to convey various layers, spaces, and light on the canvas. He also utilizes texture oil to add depth, perspective, and a rich texture to his pieces. Furthermore, he skillfully incorporates mixed media into his art, harmoniously blending water-based mediums with oil-based textures.
Lim Ah Cheng's artworks are known for their vivid colors, creative coordination, and the fusion of figures and lines. He transforms horses into semi-abstract figures that burst with energy and motion on his canvases. While many Western artistic traditions seek tranquility and stillness, Lim Ah Cheng's paintings celebrate the randomness of motion, creating powerful and dynamic visual experiences.
